snmpd and ppp interface

anyone know if there's a bug in snmpd that causes it to die when run on
a machine with a pppoe interface?

better yet, if there is such a bug, does anyone know a workaround or fix?

i found months ago that i couldn't get snmpd to stay running for more
than a minute or so (or until the first query) on my gateway machine
at home, but it runs perfectly on other machines. i had more important
things to do so didn't spend much time trying to figure it out.

i've just installed it on another gateway box (because i want to run
cricket on it) that i look after and have exactly the same problem.

the only thing in common between the two machines (apart from them both
running debian 'unstable') is that they have pppoe interfaces. other
machines i'm running it on have multiple interfaces, one even has a
wlan0 interface (so snmpd is OK with non-ethernet interfaces).

so, i think i may have found the problem.

I don't know what version it started with (several months ago at least),
but these machines are currently both running:

ppp 2.4.4rel-9
pppoe 3.8-3
snmpd 5.4.1~dfsg-4
