That makes me think that the problem is file permissions on
/tmp/.X11-UNIX.  It should look like this.

  ls -ld /tmp/.X11-unix
  drwxrwxrwt    2 root     root         4096 Mar 30 18:42 /tmp/.X11-unix/

But if that is restricted then only root will be able to contact the
server.
