Kernel image and header mismatch?

I again,

Trying to recompile the NVIDIA accelerated kernel failed with unresolved
symbols as if there was a mismatch between the
kernel-headers-2.4.17-ia64 and the default 2.4.17 McKinley modules.
Switching to kernel-image-2.4.17-itanium-smp kernel/modules doesn't
solve the problem. Only a fresh install of the complete 2.4.18 kernel
source overcomes the problem.

Is this a normal behaviour?
