Hi Ribsnet,
You have a very obscure machine.
Unfortunatley, I have the Dell version of your machine, a Precision
Workstation 730 with 2 X 800 MHz Ia64's and 2 X 18 GIG 160 SCSI disks. I
think the only difference is the SCSI adapter, which is an adaptec in the
Dell version of this computer. Honestly, I know nothing about linux. In
fact, the only time I ever looked at a linux product is after having bought the
Dell and found out how very difficult (and expensive) it was to obtain a 64 bit
version of windows XP. In addition, in my machine the EFI was totally
unconfigured and I had to remap all available drives and the cd drive so as to
make any sense out of the thing.
If it is of any help to you the mandrake 8.1 Ia64
linux version (which can be downloaded from the mandrakesoft.com site) was
extremely easy to load. It recognized all cards and HDs in a flash and,
remarkably, took about 15 minutes to load and install. The longest part
was actually figuring out that I had to chose 'boot from file' from the EFI menu
and then redirect to the cd rom, rather that using the 'boot from cd rom' menu
choice initially. In addition, this linux version automatically boots to the SMP
kernel. You can check it out by typing 'TOP' at the shell prompt (using the
console) and a detailed analysis of each CPU's utilization can be obtained.
Hope this information is of some use to you and
good luck
Ychap
