By looking where most qt apps install the qm files it is
/usr/share/<app>/i18n but ther seems to be qm files also in
/usr/share/locale/<lang>/LC_MESSAGES so I guess both might be ok?

Re-locating the qm files means that you'll need to patch the upstream
source code also? If anyway patching, one possibility might be
re-usage of 
https://github.com/operatornormal/classified-ads/blob/master/util/catranslator.h
that is gnu gettext wrapper for Qt -> you could convert the .ts files
into gnu gettext format and install into standard location. While it
again more complicates the packaging process, it gives you advantage
of .po format support that many translation teams seem to be very fond
of. ..for reason unknown to me, after playing with various translation
tools the "qt linguist" is still the translation GUI app of choise for
me.
