Hallo! On Sat, 14 May 2011 12:11:35 +0200, I wrote: > So, it's been available for several moons -- now is the time for me to > try the Hurdified Debian Installer. Now that we're working around the exim4 issue, I've again started an installation attempt. Even though this did work on my first attempt a week ago, it wouldn't do today, despide trying different variations: in this box, I have three different networks cards -- two of which GNU Mach detects. The Debian Installer lets me select which of them (eth0 or eth1 -- but doesn't tell which is which) I want to configure with DHCP. All the dozen variations (with reboots in between) didn't work. I suspect that GNU Mach has some driver issues: with all cards in, the two detected ones were using the same driver, with only a 3Com card left, it's using a different driver. (There might also be an IRC conflict involved.) If DHCP configuration failed, you're offered to ``go back'' (for selecting the other eth interface), but if you do that, the installer reproducibly hangs. I decided to go with one card for now, and only put the others back in at the time I'm working on integrating the DDE network driver work. (Don't hold your breath yet, though.) By the way, I just added this; please review: <http://www.bddebian.com:8888/~hurd-web/hurd/running/debian/dhcp/>. > Then, at the ``software selection'' screen I select ``SSH server'' > additionally to the pre-selected ``Standard system utilities''. > Installation commences Did this again, however, this didn't cause the SSH server package to be installed. Also random-egd needs to be installed manually. Then, after rebooting (and ``apt-get install joe random-egd openssh-server''), I noticed the following: # find / -perm /o=w -ls 32641 4 drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 4096 May 20 12:33 /var/lock 48989 0 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 0 May 20 17:04 /var/run/mtab 49640 4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 336 May 20 17:04 /var/run/motd 49644 4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 4 May 20 17:04 /var/run/random-egd.pid 57575 0 srwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 May 20 17:04 /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket 139157 16 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 24576 May 20 14:11 /var/lib/apt/listchanges.db 187691 472 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 476490 Nov 13 2010 /var/cache/apt/archives/joe_3.7-2_hurd-i386.deb 187692 308 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 310400 Apr 4 19:17 /var/cache/apt/archives/openssh-server_1%3a5.8p1-4_hurd-i386.deb 187693 28 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 27326 May 5 07:38 /var/cache/apt/archives/libdigest-sha1-perl_2.13-1+b1_hurd-i386.deb 187694 20 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 18918 Oct 2 2008 /var/cache/apt/archives/random-egd_0.5-0+hurd.1_hurd-i386.deb 269480 8 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 4194 May 20 13:49 /var/log/aptitude 187682 4 drwxrwxrwx 3 root root 4096 May 20 14:09 /var/log/installer 187686 4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1922 May 20 14:09 /var/log/installer/hardware-summary 187687 16 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 14414 May 20 14:09 /var/log/installer/status 285602 4 drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 4096 Apr 6 19:31 /var/tmp 65283 4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 523 May 20 12:18 /etc/fstab 65357 0 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 0 May 20 14:08 /etc/mtab 16538 4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 9 May 20 12:31 /etc/default/locale 106214 4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 40 May 20 12:30 /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00trustcdrom 106305 4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 369 May 20 14:53 /etc/apt/sources.list 106179 4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 63 May 20 12:32 /etc/apt/apt.conf 252962 4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 268 May 20 12:30 /etc/network/interfaces 65841 4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 79 May 20 17:04 /etc/resolv.conf 65837 4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 90 May 20 14:09 /etc/kernel-img.conf 81601 4 drwxrwxrwx 6 root root 4096 May 20 14:12 /media 81602 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 May 20 12:17 /media/cdrom -> cdrom0 89761 4 drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 May 20 12:17 /media/cdrom0 97921 4 drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 May 20 12:17 /media/cdrom1 106081 4 drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 May 20 12:17 /media/cdrom2 114241 4 drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 May 20 12:17 /media/cdrom3 335089 4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 60 May 20 14:08 /boot/grub/device.map 98079 0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root root May 20 12:23 /dev/null 98080 0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root root May 20 12:23 /dev/zero 98081 0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root root May 20 12:23 /dev/full 0 0 crw-rw-rw- 1 thomas tty May 20 12:23 /dev/ptyp4 0 0 crw-rw-rw- 1 thomas tty May 20 17:16 /dev/ttyp4 0 0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root root May 20 12:23 /dev/ptyp5 0 0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root root May 20 12:23 /dev/ttyp5 0 0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root root May 20 12:23 /dev/ptyp6 [...] 0 0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root root May 20 12:23 /dev/ptyqv 0 0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root root May 20 12:23 /dev/ttyqv 146904 0 -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 0 May 20 13:48 /root/.aptitude/config 171362 4 drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 4096 May 20 17:04 /tmp 171563 0 srw-rw-rw- 1 root root 0 May 20 17:04 /tmp/entropy.sock 90316 0 crw-rw-rw- 1 root root May 20 14:09 /servers/socket/26 It's not the first time I'm seeing 0666 permission files being created on GNU/Hurd, but I never tracked down under which conditions this happens. (umask set to 0 -- but why?) All in all, I now got a system installed by the Debian Installer. Real hardware: Athlon XP 1700, 1 GiB RAM, three disk drives. I also have a dual-bootable Debian GNU/Linux installation for doing comparisions. Grüße, Thomas
