Re: Debian Installer

Hallo!

Now that we're working around the exim4 issue, I've again started an
installation attempt.

Even though this did work on my first attempt a week ago, it wouldn't do
today, despide trying different variations: in this box, I have three
different networks cards -- two of which GNU Mach detects. The Debian
Installer lets me select which of them (eth0 or eth1 -- but doesn't tell
which is which) I want to configure with DHCP. All the dozen variations
(with reboots in between) didn't work. I suspect that GNU Mach has some
driver issues: with all cards in, the two detected ones were using the
same driver, with only a 3Com card left, it's using a different driver.
(There might also be an IRC conflict involved.) If DHCP configuration
failed, you're offered to ``go back'' (for selecting the other eth
interface), but if you do that, the installer reproducibly hangs.

I decided to go with one card for now, and only put the others back in at
the time I'm working on integrating the DDE network driver work. (Don't
hold your breath yet, though.)

By the way, I just added this; please review:

Did this again, however, this didn't cause the SSH server package to be
installed. Also random-egd needs to be installed manually.

Then, after rebooting (and ``apt-get install joe random-egd
openssh-server''), I noticed the following:

It's not the first time I'm seeing 0666 permission files being created on
GNU/Hurd, but I never tracked down under which conditions this happens.
(umask set to 0 -- but why?)

All in all, I now got a system installed by the Debian Installer. Real
hardware: Athlon XP 1700, 1 GiB RAM, three disk drives. I also have a
dual-bootable Debian GNU/Linux installation for doing comparisions.

Grüße,
 Thomas
