There's a problem with palette restoring yes.

That package disappeared recently yes, the documentation needs to be
updated.

That's because /usr/bin/X is supposed to be setuid, while Xorg is not.
(X checks the security stuff, then calls Xorg as root). A fixup for you
for now (since you replaced X by a link to Xorg) is to set Xorg setuid,
but X should really get fixed.
