I don't think that's the case at all. People who are aware of the difference between Linux and Redhat usually know where to place the Hurd -- if they have heard of it at all, of course. That's my experience at least. YMMV. The main misconception you have shown is that people think of Debian as a Linux distribution, and naturally place Debian material hierarchically under Linux. You can't blame them, the first paragraph of <URL:http://www.debian.org> says (under "What is Debian?") that "Debian uses the Linux kernel [...]". -- Robbe
