A translator sits on a node in the file system and waits for a request.
Generally, translators are setup to be passive. That is to say that
they get started automatically when they are accessed and persist
between reboots.
To start a translator, one uses the settrans command, try ``settrans
--help'' from the command line to learn about all of the options that it
accepts. Generally, it takes the form: ``settrans -apfg node translator
translator-options'. The apfg forces the old translator to go away and
start the new one immediately (Active) and also makes it Passive i.e.
persistent.

I am not sure that is necessary in your case (if anything you are seeing
something wrong with the hurd).
