Mistake #1, GRUB counts partitions from 0 while GNUmach starts from 1.
So your (hd0,1) whould be hd0s2.

If you are still having problems with GNUmach hanging on you, try to boot
with a crosscompiled kernel with only the bare neccessities compiled in.
