with grub's kernel command you should point to *file* containing kernel,
that is /boot/gnumach (with .gz or without), with root partition as
argument like this : (exact citation from my system, please substitute disk names)

root   (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/gnumach root=sd0s1 -s
module /boot/serverboot
