The problem is the Broadcom video card. Debian does not include any non-GPL licensed software. The driver is free, but the source is proprietary (non-free). Ubuntu includes non-free Broadcom drivers in their repository. Ubuntu maintains a separate repository for non-free software. You could add this repository, and then use apt-get to install the  broadcom crystal drivers.

Building on any distro is easy. Fedora just provides patches to a base vanilla kernel. Just get the matching vanilla kernel from kernel.org, and apply the patches. I used to build two or three kernels a week for different distros. Now, I only go through the exercise once or twice a month.
