Just one comment here--

IRLP (at least the last time I checked) is not open source.  The
developer controls it very tightly and even requires login privileges
on all the systems so he can configure things.  It was fairly Red
Hat-oriented, but I know of at least one Debian installation.  

Nate, I recall you were looking into IRLP.  Is what I described still
the case?
