This dh_gconf hack sounds like a reasonable precaution.

Completely off-topic, but you're about as impulsive and volatile as my wife! :P

This being said, you eventually get the job done, which is what matters. I'm
quite confident that you and the rest of the GNOME team can nail down the few
remaining bugs in time for letting 2.6 enter unstable before midsummer.
