This rang a bell, so I downgraded to the same version and galeon now
behaves (i.e. no longer hangs as described in bug #206169).
*confusion*
But I think gnome is somehow involved in these problems; latest gtk,
galeon and file-roller all work for a test user with ~/.g* deleted.
