Except ... (as far as I understand) sarge can not release with 1.4,
because 1.4 is no longer in sarge. In fact, sarge has no consistent
gnome at the moment: 

$ apt-cache policy gnome-panel

So it should be 2.2, or 2.4, or nothing.
