That is really, really bizarre.  Do you have LD_LIBRARY_PATH or
LD_PRELOAD set in the environment?  Are you sure you don't have extra
libs installed somewhere?  What's in your ld.so.conf?

What does "ldd /usr/bin/gnome-system-monitor | grep glib" say?

Also, does 'md5sum /usr/bin/gnome-system-monitor' give the same number
as this?

036b957c5fb8168c578f15444445b839  usr/bin/gnome-system-monitor

Also, could you check the md5sum of the .deb?  I get:

e27d713183c10fd2781b7cf502bbca0a  gnome-system-monitor_2.0.0.1-3_i386.deb

No, I'm using powerpc.  But I know a lot of other people are using
gnome-system-monitor on i386 without problems.
