I can't reproduce this problem on my end:

walters@space-ghost> ldd =gnome-system-monitor | grep 1.3                                         /foreign-cvs/cvs.gnome.org

What version of the package do you have installed?  Also, what
architecture are you on?

I do notice one thing; I need to tighten up the build depenency
versions; it is possible an architecture with one of the old libglib1.3
packages compiled it OK, which is not what we want.
