gconf key:

	/apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default/x_font

Set it to an X font name as you did gnome-terminal1. Do not touch the
font config option in the dialog or it will change this key, forcing you
to change it back by hand again. I'm told this will not work with vte,
but that's because vte uses Pango. The only solution there is to use
Xft2, which is unfortunately not yet available in Debian.
