This is probably not a GNOME specific issue but a general GTK bug and
not even a new one. I had the same with some GTK-1.2 based non-free
programmes (not from Debian). Actually upgrading the respective
programme solved the issue for me. Well this is probably not a helpful
advise, uh?

Well, I can add that with some GTK themes this bug occured and with
others it didn't. (But I'm unable to reproduce it at the moment.)  So
maybe you like to play around a bit with your GTK themes...

Anyway - this is probably _not_ a GTK/Gnome-2.0 bug. Or do you still
have umlaut display probs with GTK-2.0-based programmes?
