OK, just for the record:

The solution which can be found here:
https://github.com/interob/libgdal-ecw

seems to also work for Debian 11 and ECW SDK 5.5.0.

Make sure to use the libraries from cpp11abi directory.

  ECW -raster- (rw+): ERDAS Compressed Wavelets (SDK 5.5)
