Because of the substantial changes to the package uploading to
experimental is an obvious choice.

HDF4 is a C library, so symbols changes shouldn't happen like they do
for C++ libraries.

I'd like to do a round of reverse dependency rebuilds to verify that
they all still build successfully before considering an upload to unstable.

That seems like a good idea. I'm not really happy with the changes
required to support the -alt variant, especially because those changes
are not forwarded upstream. So I'm in favour of dropping those changes
and stick to an upstream supported configuration.

My only interest in HDF4 packaging is the fact that it's a dependency of
GDAL. As long as that works correctly, my needs for the libhdf4 package
are met.

Kind Regards,

Bas
