GDAL 1.11.4/2.0.2
GDAL 1.11.4 & 2.0.2 have been released, but unfortunately we're not able
to transition to GDAL 2.0 yet. Upstream would like everyone including
Debian & Ubuntu to adopt 2.0, as would I. We mostly need the Fiona 1.7
release which is not expected until March. [0] Once we have that we can
re-evaluate the move to GDAL 2.0. Hopefully we can switch to 2.0 before
the freeze in November, but I'm not so sure about that.
In the mean time we should transition to GDAL 1.11.4 to get the latest
bugfixes into Debian & Ubuntu.
Because of the spatialite->postgis->gdal->spatialite and
postgis->sfcgal->openscenegraph->gdal->spatialite->postgis circular
dependencies [1] we cannot easily rebuild the reverse dependencies
because the old GDAL package keeps being installed.
I've inquired about the status of the new topological library that will
be used by spatialite instead of liblwgeom [2], but I doubt it will be
available soon. Because of that, I think that we should drop the
liblwgeom dependency from spatialite to break circular dependency and
leave it out until we can switch to the new topological library.
None of the liblwgeom specific symbols in spatialite are used by other
packages in Debian, so we can get avoid triggering a spatialite
transition too. We may break 3rd party software not packaged in Debian
though.
I'm going to get rid of the circular dependency by dropping the
liblwgeom dependency from spatialite to unblock the gdal transition. My
apologies to anyone relying on the liblwgeom features in spatialite.
