if the connection is ok when you plug the client directly into the
server, but fails when you plug it into a hub, i would check if the
cable you are using is a crossover or a regular patch.

a crossover is used for connecting 2 ethernet cards directly.
a regular patch cable is used when connecting through a hub/switch.

the other thing to check is the 'uplink' switch on the hub.
