Having a look at the debian-edu tasks an obvious starting point could be 
defining basic node roles (there will be probably some overlap with those 
already defined within debian-edu) like:
 * seed server (for deploying/disaster recovery)
 * main server (file, print, DNS, DHCP...)
 * auth server (kerberos/ldap/pki)
 * monitor (central syslog, monitor)
 * router/firewall/vpn
 * virtualization cluster
 * ...
