Try using the framebuffer and libdirectfb ? (The Debian Installer used the framebuffer for the GUI installer for a couple of releases - there's an idea to switch it to Xorg which isn't a good sign....) The udebs exist in Emdebian Grip for D-I but there will still need to be a fair bit of work to get the framebuffer operating. The other option (kdrive) is defunct.
