Try using the framebuffer and libdirectfb ? (The Debian Installer used
the framebuffer for the GUI installer for a couple of releases -
there's an idea to switch it to Xorg which isn't a good sign....)

The udebs exist in Emdebian Grip for D-I but there will still need to
be a fair bit of work to get the framebuffer operating.

The other option (kdrive) is defunct.

Emdebian Crush might be able to produce an Xorg with various compile
options switched off but that's just hand-waving right now.
