In this case the file would show up again if the related package was 
reinstalled/upgraded. See 'man dpkg-divert'.

Make sure the wanted xsession is set as default (the starred one):
update-alternatives --config x-session-manager

Look up the related xsession file:
grep -r Default /usr/share/xsessions/

Then add a diversion for all other .desktop files.
