I tried again just now. After a usb install (I mean the 5G download.
Is that what you call DVD?) of lxde i386

I get "an installation step failed" which sends me back to tasksel. It
fails until I uncheck "debian-edu non-gnome and non-kde..."
Then installation completes and I end up at a prompt (lightdm has not
installed).
I log in as root and uncomment some lines in apt/sources.list because
everything is commented except security.
aptitude update gives 502 bad gateway for ftp://ftp.skolelinux.org

I changed it to http://ftp.skolelinux.org  as you mention above, and
now it works.

DVD is not ok if you mean the 5G USB.
