problem with a server

Hi all!

for almost a week now I'm trying to solve a
slowness/latency problem on a skolelinux server.

It is running fine with the normal skolelinux kernel:
e.g.
time id USENAME   -> 0,25s

but I want to use 4GB RAM (Main + ThinClientServer on one machine)
so I tried "bigger" standard Debian Kernel:

2.4.27-smp
or
2.6.8-2-686-smp

(SPM should be ok because it is a P4 Processor with HyperTreading)
with those kernels I can use the 4GB RAM but login & sstarting Apps
gets terribly slow:

time id USENAME -> up to 6,12 seconds (with kernel 2.6.8-2-686-smp)
                           4 seconds	(with kernel 2.4.27-smp )

starting firefox: up to 20seconds

I started to build my own 2.4.27 kernels, without SMP but with
4GB RAM support but it did not help

it is solw with 1 user so it is way to slow with 30 Users
- - we tried that in the school

any ideas ?

If you want to have a look at the machine,
then send me a mail and I give you ssh and NX access to it.

kind regards,
Martin Herweg
