Sure: Let others do it for you.
If you want /etc/ read-only on a CD, then let Klaus Knopper do the dirty
hand-editing for you and server it on a silverplate as scripts.
If you - as it seems we are primarily discussing in this thread - want
/etc/ read-only and served off of NFS, then let Vagrant do the dirty
work and... WAIT: He already provided the scripts on a silverplate for
you - just install the Debian package lessdisks and off you go!
