The major reason for using KDE is that it woks better with thin clients
than GNOME does. It does so because it generates less traffic on the
nettwork. But it's upp to you if you want to use GNOME, but as long as
you are using thin clients I would not recommend it.

It is not based on anything else than Debian. But we do have a
Skolelinux-Lookalike Knoppix.
