There should be no need for rootpw in slapd.conf, you have admin-user in
ldap. Try to remove that rootpw line (just place a #-sign infront of
it), and restart.

But you say webmin, is this a Sarge or Etch installation?!

The server runs Skolelinux (Lenny) from Feb. 2010. Webmin's version is
1.530.
I removed the rootpw line. The rootpw error disappeared, but the other
error ("rootdn is always granted...") still remains.

That's only informational, OpenLDAP should be working nevertheless (and
slaptest should report success).

Erik

No, the server doesn't start, it throws following error:

tjener:/etc/ldap# /etc/init.d/slapd restart
Stopping OpenLDAP: slapd.
Starting OpenLDAP: slapd - failed.
The operation failed but no output was produced. For hints on what went
wrong please refer to the system's logfiles (e.g. /var/log/syslog) or
try running the daemon in Debug mode like via "slapd -d 16383" (warning:
this will create copious output).

Below, you can find the command line options used by this script to
run slapd. Do not forget to specify those options if you
want to look to debugging output:
slapd -h 'ldaps:/// ldap:///' -g openldap -u openldap -f /etc/ldap/slapd.conf -4

But I can't find anything regarding this error in the syslog file...
