weird -- netcat-traditional and netcat-openbsd seem to have
diametrically-opposite interpretations of the -q argument. i think
Matthew was using netcat-traditional, and i was using netcat-openbsd.
when i use the -q10 argument, i get a 10 second delay; without it, i get
no delay at all.

I've opened a bug about the inconsistency:

Feel free to comment on it if you have any insight,
