Steve, Debian-NYC is thinking of looking for some local sponsors for a bug squashing party early next year. It's possible we may try for other events with a little bit of sponsorship, too. (This is all separate from DebConf related events). If we need to, could we use SPI to collect money under the Debian umbrella, and then reimburse us for our costs (right now just planned to be food at the BSP) ? I'm not sure if we'll even need to do this, but it would help to have it as an option. Of course, we'll abide by whatever legal rules are necessary for the use of SPI.
