I don't think anyone here is defending these actions, but you have to  
put them into perspective of what could happen to you in other  
countries.

Consider that in the UK they can hold you and all your stuff for 28  
days with no charges if they deem you a terrorist suspect.

In France, they can hold you for 6 days:

In the U.S. it is still a well enforced 24-hours.  For example, the  
NYPD paid major fines for holding people for 30 hours without charge  
during the 2004 Republican National Convention.
