Is seems that long path names are the problem.  I've attached a shell
script that creates a package that demonstrates the problem.  I'll
debug dpkg to find out if this is a bug in dpkg or ext3.

The attached script creates a small test package in
/var/tmp/dpkg-hard-link-problem.
