We already have a Contents-$ARCH.gz that is hardly usable except through
zgrep. Don't you think it would be nice to actually be able to easily use
this data?
As for the ressources needed to compute the file lists, it's very easy to
include a timestamp in the XML and recompute a package entry only if it
has changed. If a previous XML file is used, the recomputation shouldn't
take more than a few seconds (assuming no more than 100 or 200 files
changed since the last XML file generation).

Sure, it's possible to write a Packages.gz + Sources.gz +
Contents-$ARCH.gz, but it would be nice to have this file directly in the
archive.
