Hi, Quoting Simon Josefsson (2025-11-26 12:52:06) > My guess is that around 20% of laptops out there requires providing it with > non-free software to start. I have the MNT Reform laptop but as far as I > understand it needs non-free DDR training blobs to start. yes, unless you use it with the LS1028A processor module. And with that module you need a firmware blob for the eDP controller. You can still run it without user-provided firmware blobs if you either are happy with using it without a display (over ssh for example) or if you attach one of those older PCI-E graphics cards which do not require you to upload a firmware blob but then it would not be a "laptop" anymore. My personal take is, that it does not make a difference as far as user-freedom is concerned whether or not the hardware requires a proprietary blob to be uploaded by me. Even if that proprietary blob were baked-in, the hardware would still be non-free. Whether or not I am made to upload the blob myself doesn't change this property for me. This is why I'm also happy about the split of non-free into non-free-firmware. But we've talked about this topic before at length on this list so this will be my last message to this thread. :) Thanks! cheers, josch
