Heh, should have read the referenced bug report more carefully.
Apparently Steve came to the same conclusion :-)

I think running that cron job once a day should be plenty enough.
It's called motd for a reason.

I also think, the update-motd package should not be installed by
default, at least not on desktop installations. I think it's mostly
useful on server installations where one is typically logging in via SSH
or the console.
