Maybe I have got this wrong somewhere, however wouldn't it be possible to drop a script in /etc/profile.d that runs "uname -a" for interactive shells?

* Easy to understand.
* Easy to change.
* Simple to implement.

However:

* motd will display first. This won't be the first line of the output, does that matter?
* I think this won't work for, e.g. zsh users. At least not on my tests on a wheezy box.
