Hi Tollef and everybody,
please, I would like people to accept that things are not black and white. In
"preferred form for modification", there is the word "preferred", which shows
that personal feelings are part of the decision. And unfortunately in
centralised systems one has to decide what is good for others.
We redistribute documents that contain figures that would necessitate gigabytes
of data to be refreshed in a meaninful way, since their purpose is to show the
result of a computation. Will we remove these documents from Debian ? This
does not seem to be on the agenda.
We have to draw a line and some times it has to be arbitrary. In the case of R
packages, it makes the work easier for some and harder for others; let's see in
a couple of years what it means for Debian in terms of being a good platform
for R users. You already got a hint from one of Dirk's email: there is some
excellent work that is done outside Debian.
