I did a switch to Gnome 3, and did not know how to work with it, then
switched back to Gnome 2, tried Xfce, decided that these also have their
shortcomings, and then decided to go ahead with Gnome 3. I read the
Gnome Cheatsheet [1], practised the keyboard shortcuts, and am now a
happy Gnome 3 user, and have not looked back even once.

If somebody wants to have more than one instance of, say, the Terminal,
this is easily accomplished by doing a Ctrl mouse click instead of a
normal click.
Using the keyboard, going to the Terminal again, what I usually do is this:
Press the Windows (system) key.
Type Te
Enter - to start the terminal.
Ctrl-Enter - to start a second instance of the terminal.
Using the keyboard is fast.
