I do see this this in the changelog for 2.6.29-1:
* [x86] unset DRM_I915_KMS due to upgrade path from Lenny override
with modeset module param.
...so I guess just adding i915.modeset=1 to the kernel command line
should make it go. Once i686-bigmem packages for 2.6.31 get
autobuilt (KMS wasn't compatable with PAE prior to this release),
I'll follow up to 521596 if config changes seem to be necessary
after all.
