Automatic Debug Packages

Hi folks,

I proposed [1] a GSoC project this spring which was accepted, and I'm thus
working on getting automatic debug packages into Debian.

The reasons for this are, among others, that adding -dbg packages to thousands
of packages doesn't scale, that they bloat the archive and mirrors, and the
ability to use debugging symbols over the network by using build-ids.

The proposal is (very briefly) to make dak accept .ddeb packages (containing
debugging symbols using build-ids), and to then modify helper tools to
automatically generate them and add them to the changes file. I've written down
the details in the wiki [2], and I'll appreciate it if you could give some
feeback. I don't want to trash this completely though, so no drastic changes
preferred :)

Cheers,
Emilio
