The available syslog solutions we currently have are: dsyslog sysklogd/klogd syslog-ng socklog-run rsyslog inetutils-syslogd All provide (and conflict with) system-log-daemon/linux-kernel-log-daemon A analysis of the packages depending on a syslog package some months ago [1] showed, that all have at least system-log-daemon as alternative depedency (the ones which didn't have been fixed). So you can switch to your preferred syslog, if you want so. The current default syslog for Debian is rsyslog. The only minor issue that is left, that most packages still specify the default syslog directly, i.e. most still have Depends/Recommends/Suggests: sysklogd | system-log-daemon still after the switch to rsyslog. We'd have to update quite a few packages to change that to rsyslog | system-log-daemon There was a related discussion on debian-devel [2][3] about how to speficy the default mta. I'm interested in the outcome and very likely pursue the same approach (probably a default-syslog package) for the syslog packages In my POV, this bug report can be closed as the raised issues have been sorted out.
