I did forget that aspect, but of course liberal touch'ing can get you
around those problems. Also automake's use of missing tends to make
things just work even with timestamp skew
(http://sources.redhat.com/automake/automake.html#maintainer_002dmode).
Maintainer-mode is also a good solution.
