That's a mere artifact of our release cycle. Dselect only be came a
separate package in woody, and a clean upgrade required that dselect be,
er, required, by dpkg. I've had dselect uninstalled since the early days
of sarge.

As someone who happily used dselect for many years, and never really
thought it was all that bad, I admit that I haven't used in a long
time; aptitude is, IMO, a generally better interface. I do miss the
sorting interface in dselect, though. Aptitude has powerful sorting
capabilities, but the interface is a bit clumsy. In dselect, I could
just hit 'o' and 'O' randomly until I got what I wanted :-).
