Yes; no reply yet.  

I have also just uploaded a new bbconf package which does the
following at the front of debian/rules (configure):

        -dpkg -l
        -ls /usr/X11R6/lib
        -apt-cache show xlibs-dev
        -apt-cache show libx11-dev
        -apt-cache show libx11-6

Perhaps that will show something illuminating.  But while such probes
are my only strategy for attacking the problem, they are hardly the
best solution.
