It has been up for a few minutes, just allowing me to update my D-I
copy and commits changes I had waiting for 3 days.

Then it went down again (not completely down but SSH broken). 

Wichert, Matt Taggart and a few others are investigating. Memory
problems suspected. Wiggy is currently backing up the repositories...
