This is good news. A friend of mine purchased a new dual opteron
rackmount server to replace his current colo. He wants to run pure
64bit mode and Debian, but at this point does not know the status of the
port.

Where can someone, who wants to start running a Debian AMD64 pure, find
this information? Most of the documentation on the amd64 port details
bi-arch setups.
